Transmission button locked 700 1990

Transmission shift lever locked in Park. Backed down driveway this a.m. for the newspaper, no problem, but noticed a burning smell. Drove forward and parked no problem, went out and car will not shift out of park, button will not go down, nor will car start. Any suggestions GREATLY appreciated. Need to get to work. Thanks
