How important is an 's' shaped exhaust pipe on a wagon?

I just replaced my rusted mufflere with a Magnaflow stainless one. I need to redo the tailpipe. I can get on OEM Starla pipe or do something a little more custom. The question is - I know that the "s" shape is there for a reson on the wagon's has anyone had a problem using anything else at the tail end of the muffler ? I was thinking maybe a nice tip that exited straight back.
