I put car back on the road after it sat for 4 years. I did tune up etc and swapped the AMM. Car has been running strong and smoothly for 4+ months. Finally got all the safety requirements met (tires, brakes, exhaust system, tie rod ends, lts etc), so the inspector ran the NYS emissions test. He ran it on the Dynamometer (sp?) Results:
Vehicle reading HC 1.77 gpm CO 1.44 gpm NOx 5.44 gpm
Test Limits HC 0.80 gpm CO 15.00 gpm NOx 2.00 gpm
Inspector/mechanic said these readings mean engine is running hot and is blowing unburned fuel out the tail pipe.
He recommended I re-gap plugs or put in new plugs - mine were grey and maybe gapped too big. He recommended add FI cleaner to next tank of gas. I told him my antifreeze was not 50/50 but mostly water cause I was flushing system. It was also filled over the midline on plastic reservoir.
I said I would re-do cooling system flush with "Gunk" flush as per direx, then fill w 50/50, which I have done to correct level.
I put in new Bosch Platinum+4 plugs (4 grounding electrodes around rim of plug tip).
I put in a bottle of FI cleaner.
Q? now: fill the gas tank with what octane 87? 89? or 93? One more Q below.
I will run thru the on-board diagnostic unit checks and follow thru w results. I looked at FAQ here, and searched topic "emission failed inspection", both very helpful. I copied and printed the threads, I will check vac lines and FPR, then move down the lists. The inspection costs $37 and takes hours out of my work day waiting, so I want to be thorough before I go back.
Q? does the test indicate worn out Catalytic Converter?
I will post results of my to-do checklist/repairs/improvements. I'd appreciate answers to my 2 Qs, plus any insights and suggestions.
Thanks, Steve
