I'm new to Volvos. I just recently bought a 1992 740 wagon as a winter beater and may even keep it as a daily driver if I can get the air to work and put collector car insurance on my Camaro, saving a good chunk of change.

I got the owners manual with this one, including a notebook where a previous owner kept track of the service. One entry says he removed the Fram air filter and replaced it with a Volvo part because it "has larger filter area". Is this actually true and would it make any noticeable difference, or could it have been some propaganda told him by the Volvo service manager? I put a new Fram filter in the car because the Volvo one in there looked really old and beat-up. However, the Fram cost me $37 at Canadian Tire, so I dread to imagine what a genuine Volvo one might cost at a dealer. I could even have bought a $10 filter on-line and have been ahead after shipping to Canada if I had wanted to wait.

On the subject of filters, I didn't buy a Fram oil filter because I've heard bad things about them, but got a Quaker State QS16, which is a bit longer than the Fram and the KNECHT MAHLE OC204 that was on there. Any feedback on these QS filters, or what's a good one at a normal price?
