The saga continues: last December, not knowing what to do but wanting to work on my car that wouldn't start, I repaired the license plate light, tried starting the car one more time before going to a mechanic and miraculously it started: it ran great for six months. I don’t know why.
Looking at the wiring harness, I was surprised I had been so lucky to have it run at all. I replaced the wiring harness but still no start: I looked at the fuel pump relay that seemed to be tilting, and noticed that three of the wires from underneath the connector had come loose, losing the prongs on the terminal ends that keep them snug in the connector.
I refastened them, and voila, the car started up. I drove 4 miles when the car died, and I was able to baby it back home, squeezing the pump relay wires into the connector in one hand while steering the wheel in the other.
I’m sure they’re tightly in there now, but I now have the same problem only worse, since putting the car into any gear will immediately stall it out: the car idles fine, but when I give it gas it hesitates between revving and dying depending upon how gingerly I apply the accelerator. After it stalls out, it restarts easily.
Besides the wiring harness, I’ve replaced the power stage (it died while I was trying to solve the main problem), idle air control, intake manifold gasket (could a leak there cause these symptoms?), and fuel pressure regulator.
I’m thinking about taking off the intake manifold (inspect gasket)and looking for vacuum leaks. Do you have any other suggestions? I really appreciate the help.
