plastic box just forward and up of starter on engine block?????????????? 200 1984

took the intake manifold off to change the gasket(rough idle when hot) and followed one of the vaccum hoses and it wen't down just to the front of the starter, mounted with 2 bolts, is a plastic box on the lower middle engine block. has the big vaccum hose leading back to the hose at the throttle plate, abot an inch in diameter, and the other is hooked up to intake manifold side 5/16" hose. anyone have a clue what the plastic box is?????
