Nasty Gas smell 1800 1973

Looking for tips on a smelly gas leak of somekind on the Fi 73
When i bought this car it had a physical fuel leak at the pump. I replaced all of the hoses around the pump with new High pressure hose and clamps and replaced the fuel filter. I removed the pump and cleaned etc. Cleaning the hard lines and replacing the hoses properly. The visible leak stopped.
There are no visible signs of leakage but there is an obvious smell.
The hose that leads from the expansion tank to the air canister in the front of the car is disconnected. Can that cause a strong smell?
Other than that everything appears intact and Ok. I seems to be at the rear of the vehicle and maybe inside so I am focussing on the tank etc but could be of base.
Is the tank cap gasket suspect? Are there usual suspects?
I garaged the vehicle tonight for the winter but wow the smell is strong and my garage is connected to my house so.....
Any tips.
