What goes wrong w/ a CPS? Fix CPS wires 200 1989

I have an occasional no-start on my 89 and pulled the CPS (crank position sensor) to check it out. The wire insulation is cracked and all that but the wires seem intact.

So is the problem that one/ both of the wires break/ short? Or is the problem that the CPS module itself fails internally? If it's just a wiring problem I'm tempted to retape the wires and see if it'll work a bit longer.
