overdrive = dead car... now scarily alive! 200 1984

I posted some time ago about a my car dying after a failed overdrive engagement. I had a hard time tracking down the problem (BTW - thanks for the good logical advice from this forum), including chasing electronic bugs around, checking the timing etc. Finally I decided to just start replacing things, beginning with the rotor/cap (just based on the fact that the existing one was old and it couldn't hurt). I'm embarrassed to reveal that it turns out the rotor had gone bad - sort of spun out or something - and now the car starts right up. However... now the car races like crazy when idling! There's no tachometer, but it sounds like I have the gas pedal pressed to the floor.

Is there a simple mistake I might have made when installing the rotor, or does this suggest another problem, perhaps linked to the fuel injectors?

confused...
