need help with charging problem 900 1991

Hi - my 940T wagon stopped charging. I replaced the brushes. Didn't help. I replaced the alternator. The alternator wasn't charging still. I took the alternator back and got another one. It checks out in the store (they put it on the tester) but it doesn't work in the car. Volvo repair place verified that I have the alternator hooked up properly, and they told me the alternator was dead. But I took the alternator back out, retested it at the store, and it works.

So, where is the problem? How could an alternator work outside the car but not in the car? Is this a ground issue? If so, which grounds should I check?

I'm stumped and frustrated and really need this car to get to work. I love it and have done a lot of work on it myself, but this charging issue is going to be the death of me.

There are two ribbon like grounds coming from the firewall. One goes to the back right bolt of the valve cover gasket. The other end goes somewhere else, but when I changed the gaskets, I misplaced the ground point - where should it go?
