140 tranny swap problems 140-160

I bought a M41 transmission (supposedly) to replace the M40 transmission in my 1973 142. The company in St. Louis said that their M41 from a 1974 140 would work fine. First of all, the bell housing is different and won't work on the '73. Second, on the main tranny it says "M43A".and above that "1023505". Does anyone know what that means? On the overdrive section a plate says "Laycock Overdrive J Type" 25/115655/006233. Can anyone shed some light on this problem?
