87 240 transmission kickdown cable 200

Apparently, the kickdown cable somehow became diconnected at the transmission. The cable itself has free non-binding movement inside the cable sheathing. No resistance at all. When I pull on the cable at the engine compartment, I don't get any resistance. I think that I should be getting some spring tension resistance of some sort, but I don't know for sure. The cable has free travel for about 6 inches. How difficult would it be to correct this problem, or what would be the cost to get it done?

Has anyone experienced this problem or anything like this with this cable? Any information on this problem would be appreciated!

Thanks
