coolant/thermostat/aux fan switch 200 1993

1993 245 - unknown miles - could be 200K (odometer broken) - bought in crap shape via ebay 2+ years ago and lots of problems show minimal or no maintenance, let alone continued driving since it's "birth," etc. Have been changing filters, fluids, shocks, brakes etc. - and fortunately, engine runs great and trans is in good shape!

1. So - NO history of repairs or maintenance. Coolant is my next "attack" - was down a quart and tested too much a-freeze for water mix. Doubt (but never sure) if orig Volvo coolant is still in since I know orig manual doesn't recomm change or flush - just top of of the $30/gallon stuff.

With questionable profile, my gut and naive instinct is to flush system or possibly drain if radiator is too old (have to inspect) - using some radiator cleaner to run before hand. Then Zerex G05 or Prestone or ? - unclear about critical differences other than it is the green, ethylene glycol. Valvoline's Zerex G05 was recommended on Brickboard, but lots of models besides the 200 series are included. Recommendations? How often change anti-freeze? If minimal miles per year, still important since it can breakdown to some extent over time. I know this is anti-Volvo's manual, but with unknown fluid and history, it makes sense. I would also think that technology has made some improvements over the years and perhaps coolant changes and protective properties of "fresh" coolant may be a good thing.

2. Change thermostat at same time - live in Chicago w/ high and low extreme temperatures - 87 degree C? 82? 92? (lots of Groton options) Manual says that "thermostat opens up at 92 degrees) - some postings have said that 92 may be better for the engine - running hotter may help efficiency, mileage, etc. Is there a different recommendation if ac system is fixed or there is never air conditioning?

3. Aux fan - mountings broken, ac not working and $$$ parts/labor won't be possible for a couple years. Does anyone know how to be sure that it is disconnected? where is the aux fan push switch located that I could remove? Just don't want cable tied fan somehow start running w/ or w/o ac.

Your collective knowledge has always been a big help - many thanks!!!
