erratic temp gauge 900 1995

new to me 1995b 964 w the b6304

Car runs fine and no problems at all except for the temp gauge that starts to act all wild.

When cold and from the first few min its all good..reads cold then climbs up to the middle..then after about 20min or so the temp gauge starts to flicker very fast past the red zone then back then past the red zone then back very fast.

so whats more common. temp. gauge? or the sender? or a ground somewhere?
and also where is the temperature sender on these engines?
