Loose Wire 200 1991

I have just come into possession of a 1991 Volvo 240 wagon I bought for my former wife. She considers it dead, so she "gifted" it to my son.

Anyway he and I replaced the alternator today and I was puzzled by a short black wire that runs from the alternator to the engine into what is probably a sensor. I read through my Bentley and Chlton manuals, but no answer. Can you tell me what this wire is?
