Hi. Considering an '89 240GL sedan for teenage daughter. Car started out in Arizona, but since 1995 has "lived" in Colorado, the last 11 years in Massachusetts, non-garaged. Undercarriage looks rusty, 'tho owner, a Boston grad student, says her mechanic said rust not of concern. Rust over wheels on rear body. Huge (appx.1" wide - 2-1/2 feet long)godzilla gash across trunk, with paint peeling from significant rust. There's lots of warnings out there about not buying a car with rust, but are there degrees of rust? Would the trunk gash possibly point to more rust under paint? And the rusty undercarriage? Not sure whether the rust all by itself should be the deciding factor on whether to forge ahead and bring the car to an independent Volvo mechanic for pre-purchase inspection. Drove well, steering tight, haven't gone out on highway yet. Rubbery, clunky sounds on surface streets--owner pointed to the snowtires. Odometer out at 189,000 two years ago. Has had regular service, new alternator, recent heater core, muffler, but owner is unsure of timing belt. (Service records promised but not yet available from her general (non-Volvo)mechanic.) She's asking $1200, and I guess the biggest question is about the rust. Thanks ahead of time for your thoughts.
