New wheels for a '94 940 900 1994

Greetings-

My mechanic told me I need a new set of wheels for my '94 940 (he described the existing wheels as "square"). He does great work and has always been uncommonly honest with me, and since I know nothing about cars, I believed him. He also said the wheels I need are "impossible to find." This sounded odd, so I went on the internet & checked several websites. I had no trouble finding plain steel 15x6 wheels advertised as compatible. I bought a set, but Mechanic then told me that they're not compatible, and that only wheels taken from another Volvo will fit. I asked if 15x6 was the wrong size, and he said 15x6 is fine. I asked him what are the parameters that don't fit, and he said he doesn't know, they're just wrong--something about the bolts. I don't have the time or the skills to start doing major work on my car. What's with this guy? Is he winding me up? Is it really that hard to put a new set of wheels on a Volvo? I would appreciate any outside opinion.

Thanks-
