Hello All,
The automatic transmission in my ‘92 745 developed a problem after changing the fluid and filter. It changes through all four gears as automobile speed increases but now it doesn’t change into what felt like a fifth gear (happened around 47 mph). This so called fifth gear I always thought was the torque converter locking-up.
My wife has to drive the interstate to go to work and at 55 mph and above the rpm’s are up there and the car is drinking fuel.
The transmission does have a tendency to occasionally stay in first gear until you let off the gas – then it will shift to second. I don’t know if this could be related to the so called “fifth gear” problem.
I flushed the transmission with mobile synthetic by opening the line at the cooler – no change (cost me about $70 in fluid!).
Additional info:
B230 NA with 200k.
Overdrive was disconnected prior to this problem (yellow up shift arrow always off).
No gear slippage.
Markings on transmission; AW M03-70L.
Kickdown cable is new and properly adjusted.
Don’t know the complete history of the car. I purchased the vehicle with 140k about five years.
I have no clue what to check or how to troubleshoot this problem. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
