Pulling out the dash 140-160 1971

It's getting warm again here in Virginia so I'm tackling my dashboard and instrument panel. Is there a trick to pulling it all off? Looks like I'll have to remove the steering wheel but there are also small phillips head screws at the base of the windshield that screw in sort of horizontally. Do I need to take those out to remove the vinyl dashboard surround? I'm nervous about just tugging and pulling on stuff before I know what I'm doing. This is my first time doing it and I obviously want to avoid breaking anything by (pure) ignorance.

Can anyone give me a couple pointers or places to look? I didn't find much in the manuals. Thanks!

ps. I removed the lower part of the dash with the heat vents and controls in the center - I'm just talking about the big part that goes around the instrument panel and radio, etc.
