Hard start, Rough Idle, Running rich, Smoking, Idiot lights all on 200 1993

Hi all, I have a 93 240 wagon. It has recently started giving me problems. When you try to start it cold, it will crank fine, but just won't start. It acts as if it is trying to start, it will sputter while cranking, and occasionally, continue to sputter for a second or two after cranking ceases just to die again. It blows a ton of smoke while it's doing this and smells of gas strong. The engine shakes violently and all of the idiot lights remain on. Well, except the check engine light. That has never come on once since I got it...NEVER...I haven't checked to see if there's a bulb in there or not. After a while it sputters more and more before dieing until, all of a sudden the idiot lights go out and it will run. Only now it's not sputtering, it's more like a miss, like when there's water under the distibutor cap. If you press the throttle a few times, it smooths out and eventually runs OK. I say OK, cause even once it's running it will occasionally die but will start again fine if the engine is hot. I have ordered a FPR and a temperature sensor from FCP Groton and will put them in this weekend. I am also changing the fuel filter and cleaning the throttle body. While I'm in there, how many grounds should I inspect? Where are they located? Any guesses as to how the indicator lights are related to the rough idle?
