Hi guys, I have got kind of an interesting question, and would greatly appreciate any help, insight or ideas that anybody might have...
Let me give some background:
I bought an 85 244dl for $300. When I purchased it, it ran, but it ran really rich, and wouldn’t pass smog, but it also had a new cat, new plugs, cap and rotor, o2 sensor, breaks and clutch.
Anyways, I drove it back home, and put over 125 miles on it around town, to try and figure out what was going on with the car.
The first thing that we found was that the thermostat wasn’t opening... so we replaced that, no problems there
Then we sea foamed it, and did an intake gasket... this is where the problems started... after the oil change, and the lap around the block, as I was pulling back into the garage, the starter tried to engage on its own while the engine was running... needless to say, I shut it off, and pushed it back into the garage. After this, it wouldn’t start again
We were thinking that it was the legendary Volvo harness wire problem... so we rebuilt the front harness, replacing all three bad (without insulation) wires, and taped it back together...
It still didn’t start, so we started looking at the timing... the belt looked like it was already off 4 teeth, and then moved another two while we were aligning pulleys... cause for concern there
So we replaced the timing belt and tensioner, and still no start
We then come to think that it may be the jetronic computer... the p.o. seemed to think that was the problem, but besides smog, it had no problems... so anyways, I got a comparable computer, and swapped that on... and still no start...
When we hooked the fuel pump up to direct power, it flowed fine, and I have a known fuel pump relay here that works, and that doesn’t seem to make a difference either...
I just don’t know where to turn next...
