RPM/Crank Sensor Suspect 700

Fellow Bricksters,

The car is a 1990 760 with B230FT and 226k on the odo.

Back in January, I posted a note here about an intermittent dying problem my car was having, and received several helpful replies. Specifically, the car would be running fine, then suddenly the engine would die, just as if I turned off the ignition switch. Putting it in neutral and cranking a bit longer than normal (typically), it would start up and run fine again. Sometimes weeks or months would go by before it would happen again. Because this has been an intermittent condition, I have been putting up with it. Since January, it has reappeared only about a half-dozen times, and would always clear up. I could successfully start the car almost immediately after it died.

This afternoon, however, it looks like it finally went kaput for good. So, I went back and reread the answers to my January post. Then I read through the FAQ here:

http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineSensors.htm#Crank_Postition_Sensor

One of the respondents in the faq suggested that a resistance reading across the three terminals would be one way of telling if the sensor was bad (center terminal to each side). He indicated that about 160 ohms is nominal. I tried this with my DMM, and got nothing on one side and on the other, I would get a momentary reading (lasting maybe a second or so), and then it would show an open circuit as well. So, I'm thinking at this point that the Crank/RPM sensor is the culprit. I'll confirm this once I've installed the replacement, which won't be until Monday at the earliest -- the Volvo shop I frequent is out, and won't have them back in stock until then.

Thought I'd share this with the group.
