The best way to increase fuel mileage??? 120-130 1965

I am hoping some of you guys might have some suggestions. Tell me if I am wrong, or if it would be worthwhile.

I currently have:

- 1965 Volvo 122 Canadian
- Rebuilt B20B Swap
- Rebuilt original M40 Transmission
- Dana 27 rear

I already know I want to go overdrive, so either M41 transmissions are my options I suppose. (BTW what's better, D or J?) However would it be worthwhile to also convert to FI?

And would I defeat the purpose to trying to save fuel by switching to FI w/out swapping transmissions beforehand?

Right now, I am getting irritated with the SU carbs. I've been tinkering with them for months now and still can't get what I used to get of about 24mpg prior my air leak issue which eventually led to me getting about 15mpg. I swapped out the leaky gaskets between the manifold and carbs, and now it's more like 19mpg, but still not the 24mpg. UGGH!

I am concerned due to the fact that right now this is my DD, and my job involves driving miles and miles a day for my job as a traveling rep for my company and I'd love to do what I can to be able to drive this beautiful machine without sacrificing fuel milage if at all possible.

Help?

Thanks!
