245 run problem 200 1982

my 82 245 dl just quits running periodically, then won't start, If I open up the fuel pump relay and hold down the contact, it starts and runs, but idles too fast, fuel pumps are fine, relay is 8 months old, what's upstream of the the relay, that might be tempurature sensitive, or intermittent? the scematic in the Haynes was too hard for me to read, have visual handicap, could the relay die that soon?
