Bang in rear when starting '89 240 DL 200 1989

Recently when I start up my 240, it will take a few extra seconds to start, then make a bang or knock from the back just before it starts. Sometimes it will start with no problems, but most of the time I hear the knock/bang.

Also, when I make a quick start from a full stop, it will make a few quiet knocks, almost like a rattle, then be fine. But if I make a slow start from a full stop, no noise. I have not noticed any loss of power and apart from that the car seems to be OK. Any ideas?
