Why is '88 model year best? 200

I've got an '80 245 B21. Rusting, needs body work. I'm seeing '88s going for under a $1000.

The main problem is the body. I like the B21 carburetted with M46 transmission. Mechanical fuel pump, no electronics (other than cassette player and recently added Pertronix ignition) so easy to diagnose and fix.

So what makes the '88 better? Is engine hardier and gets better mileage?
