I had a 88 240 GL and now have a 91 245 and a 87 244 GL. I would say the 87 is the best of the three years that I have owned. Later years are to have Updated rod, FI, larger bearing but The 87 has much more power and just ran better. My only issue would be the air conditioner and fan motor is noisy. I did buy the 87 new.
