(83 245 project car)
Since buying the car 3 years I've replaced too many things to recount. In that time the car has had one issue after another. Its taken me 3 years to get it to run right. I've been chasing multiple problems and some of my remedies where to blame for more issues. Like the AMM connection on the new harness. There where a few other issues dealing with the dirty fuel tank (sat a few years prior to buying it) and the Chrysler distributor to Bosch using an '85 for an '83 year. (It now works as far as I can tell)
This week I read not for the first time but it was definitely the first time I took it all that serious. I read about cleaning the connection to the AMM with some electrical contact cleaner and checking the pressure of the little clips inside.
First I put the pick in each clip slightly to test the pressure. One of the clips felt loose compared to the others. I cleaned the contacts and pressed the little clips inside together. Sure enough I started the car and it ran real smooth. I can now accelerate without feeling like I'm going to have it cut out or run rich when pressing the gas down too much.
I tried the AMM test by undoing the clip with the ignition off. But now since I've solved the fuel issues that abounded in form of plugged filters, bad check valve and dirty injectors, I could finally notice that there was actually an effect in form of idling better.
Now I'm realizing as well how I killed my O2 sensor by having my AMM not working properly over a couple years. Even though I drove the car no more than a couple thousand miles in the past 3 years.
I was thinking today about how much I've learned by having a second car that needed so much work. Its been a good learning tool, nice to learn on a car I'm not depending on too. But in the future if a car has been sitting the first priority will be to clean the tank, replace filters and have the injectors cleaned along with a few other fuel related chores.
