replaced shift linkage bushings car will shift from part to reverse with a slight pull on the shift lever

On my 84 245, there was some play in the shift lever (front to back). I replaced the bushings and now the problem remains that if you place the trans in park, without pushing the shift lever button in and by pulling slightly back on the lever the car will slip into reverse. Will adjusting the linkage help this? Or is something wrong with the inhibitor plate?
