In what condition are the motor and transmission mounts? Any misalignment of the power train to the shifter could cause a problem.
If the mounts are in good shape I would then check to see if the linkage adjustment is correct. I do not know what the correct procedure is for adjustment. What worked for me was to have good mounts and bushings in place and then check position.
I did this by disconnecting the linkage and then putting the gear selector in Park (this would be a good time for you to check the inhibitor). I then moved the arm attacted to the transmission to Park. When both the gear selector and transmission are in Park the linkage should connectors should slip right into place. Move the selector to 1 and that same ease of removing and replacing the connector should occur.
