I am the proud owner of a 89 740 wagon, and I just got the terminal illness notice that the left rear axle bearing race is shot. As soon as I heard the noise, I had it checked out, too late. almost 300K on it, engine still good, would love to keep it. I'm no big expert but I have an expert in the family to work on it with, if we had a strategy. Is there anything I can do to to contain the play and prevent fatal long-term deterioration?
Sometimes I'll get the low grumble while I'm driving, the rotational high-pitched noise as I'm braking, noticable resistance to acceleration from the friction in 3rd and 4th gear. But othertimes (more rare) it's virutally unoticeable, no resistance at all.
One other thing: I'm still not sure what is likely to happen if I drive it into the ground. Thanks for any help or advice you can give.
