Headlight dimmer/Turn signal switch, ghost in the machine? 140-160

I was trying to get my Rallye dash gauges working. Move a few wires around with the fuel gauge and temp gauge and they work!!

Then after re-install I flicked the headlight dimmer switch and the guages pegged out. Crap,

I spent the day going over the rat's nest of an early rallye dash. I had made many modificatons under the dash with MS, so I traced my circuits under the dash. I was getting a weird circuit leak from the headlight circuit into the instrument panel lights. The headlights would not come on dependibly with light switch. The dimmer switch would not switch from low to high beam. After a while the dimmer switch started to fail. Then all of a sudden every thing worked. Then stopped working.

Seems like the dimmer switch was damaged when I removed the dash. Any thing else to consider before I go out and get another dimmer switch? Anyone have a dimmer switch for a 71 142E?

Thanks
