740 and 940 transmission 700 1990

Greetings all, firts time poster to the wonderful site. My question is this:

I have 2 volvos, a 1990 740 turbo wagon, and a 1993 940 turbo sedan. Both died in the same week (not dead, but limping) my 740 has a blown head gasket and the 940 has a bad transmission (after 310,000 miles mind you). I want to pull the trans out of the 740 and put it into the 940. Will this work? both have the same engine, but im not sure if the transmissions are interchangeable. Any help would be appreciated! :)
