1990 740 turbo blowing blue smoke 1990

I just bought a 1990 740 turbo and it is blowing blue smoke especially when idle. The mechanic seems to think it is the turbo going bad but I have had no loss of power and it seems to run okay just smokes alot. Could there be a simpler/cheaper reason or is the turbo the main problem? I am burning oil and have replaced what is burned but looking to not spend a fortune.
