strut replacement 200 1989

Need help in figuring out best procedure for strut replacement.
Does entire strut assembly need to be removed from car?
Or can strut insert be replaced with strut tower attached at bottom and tower angled out of fender well?
I have checked faq but seems only to apply to 700 and 960 cars.
