The 700/900 FAQ is almost entirely applicable to the 240. The only difference is that the 740 has some different/more parts that come off the strut assembly once you remove the top nut.
The green books are available as PDF's at k-jet.org. Worth getting a copy of the Bentley 240 manual as well. Read these.
Once the strut is outside of the fender, I rest the bottom on a floor jack, and use some rope to keep the strut upright:

Notice the I reattached the tie rod after lowering the strut out. I did this for a counterhold so I could get the gland nut off. **Don't do this** That steering rack was leaking and old and being replaced. I had is chocked, etc.
The only hard part is getting a stubborn gland nut off. If yours is stuck, get ready to remove the strut tube from the car, and hit it with a pair of pipe wrenches.
Just be *real* careful with the springs. Use a good spring compressor, and lube it up with grease. An impact wrench is real handy for doing struts.
