I took off the front wheels, calipers & brackets (have new calipers ready to install), removed rotor. The rusted dust sheilds crumpled and fell apart, leaving only the ring around the back of the hub. I have new dust sheilds ready to install. I took off the bearing cap and there is a huge nut, no cotter pin, and no grease visible (unlike my 240s and my '87 740). I looked at 740 FAQ and now believe my 1990 740 has the "newer, 2 part" bearings. The hub spins tight, smooth and quiet, so I don't think I need new bearings nor new hubs.
After reading (twice) the procedure for hub/bearing installation, I get the impression it's tricky. Maybe not, just different from replacing dust sheilds, bearings, grease etc on the "older" hubs/spindles.
I have a 1 7/16" socket which is a pretty good fit on the front wheel hub nut, and I have a torque wrench.
Any recommendations before I proceed? My Chilton 740 manual goes up to 1988, so the "new" bearings are a surprise.
Thanks in advance.
