Remove timing cover to install water pump? 200 1988

This is my first water pump replacement for a Volvo and I've read through a lot of posts regarding how to install it (use lubricant on the seals, pry pump upward, etc) but I still have a question.

Do I have to remove the timing cover to replace the pump? If not, would it be easier if I did?

I know I'll get some insightful answers so "thank you" in advance.
