Gear shift "lock' 200 1991

IN redoing the entire inside of our 1991 240, I removed all that I could, carpets, seats, anything else that would budge. That includes the two center consoles, one around the gearshift and one housing emergency brake and seat heater switches. Once in a while the gearshift gets stuck and I have to wrestle with the little yellow plastic lock. It is okay to remove this altogether or is there a way to set it so it doesn't get stuck? Thanks,
