Alot of talk recently on replacing front struts. What type of compressor do you guys/gals use? I have the 2 hook type although the last time I did a strut a few years back I borrowed a clam shape compressor from a mechanic friend of mine.It did feel alot safer. The tool was a bit pricey, professional quality. It was a tad big and not as easy to manuver as the "stick" kind but no worries about something slipping off or a hook breaking.
I remember helping my brother a long time ago replace some springs on a car, can't recall the make, and while compressing it one of the hooks broke. The spring looked like a giant U.We didn't want to go near it.After we summoned some courage we slowwly started to release the other compressor until the spring returned to its shape.WHEW!Then we went out, bought a new set of compressors and did it RIGHT. Live and learn.
Idealy I'd like to have the type of compressor that the shops use.It mounts to the wall and you place the entire strut assembly in it.
