Hi everybody!
My 1990 Volvo 740 GL has started to stall out at random times. It starts right up easily, but one day driving along at about 40mph the engine just cut off. I was able to start it back up easily and thought nothing of it really. But...the problem has kept happening more frequently now. It stalls out and can't be restarted while driving down the road and it also does it while just idling too now.

I just did another little test on it. I turned the key and I could hear the fuel pump cut on. The car started up great and was idling fine. The only thing I could notice at idle was the idle rpm was surging from around 700 to 800rpm constantly. But thats not too strange for this car when it is cold. I let the engine warm up, then decided to just punch the throttle a little bit and see what that would do. I punched it, and the engine cut off immediately with no surges in rpm or anything like that when it happened. It acted like someone just turned the key off. The engine would not restart at all, AND I noticed that the fuel pump did not cut on again. I COULD NOT HEAR THE FUEL PUMP DO ITS AUDIBLE NOISE BEFORE STARTUP. The engine just kept cranking, but not catching on. I gave it about 10 minutes(cooled off almost all the way), then tried it again. Turned the key(heard the fuel pump cut on) and the engine started right up! After about 45 seconds of idling the engine shut off on its own without me touching the throttle. I tried to restart it, but it just kept cranking and would not start again. The fuel pump did not cut on during this 3rd start either.

Does anyone know what this could be? The car has a regina system. The fuse for the fuel pump is good, but the pump seems to work intermittently and cuts off at random times or when more fuel is demanded. Please help me out!
