unknown coolant loss in a 1989 245? 200 1989

I have a new to me 1989 245, and it has started to loose coolant. In the past few days, I have replaced about a gallon and a half of coolant. When you stop the car, you can smell it, and you can see some wetness on the starter. I have a short commute to work, only about two miles each way. When I got the car, the heater only worked on the freeway, but now it gets warm after a miler or so.

There are no puddles under the car, the oil still looks like oil (rather than melted chocolate), any idea where it is going?

Is some sort of stop leak ok to put in? And given that the only way in is the coolant overflow tank, how would you put it in?

Thanks,
Ron
