Piereburg fuel pump repair questions 140-160

My 1970 144s parts car decided not to pump fuel from the temporary gas can the other day. Could have been that the rubber fuel hose I had folded over and pinched off got fused closed over the weeks I let it sit that way.....but, I removed the mechanical fuel pump to have a look see....

Diaphragm appears OK. So, I am reading the Autobook Volvo 140 workshop manual and therein it says to rotate the diaphragm 90 degrees and it will disengage from the fork end of the pivot arm.

Nope.

Just rotates.

Is there a better trick to this? I could remove the pivot pin, but would rather not risk working blindly trying to engage the shaft of the diaphragm later in assembly.

Also I read on a vintage VW bug restoration site that the diaphragms made in Mexico ate junk. Of course to buy his reproductions...

any good ones out there?

Finally, what is a great method for restoring looks to the soft pump body of this pump?
