I've had this '88 240 DL for almost 6 years now. Ever since I bought it, it has had an occational high pitched whirring sound. It has always been difficult to determine exactly where the sound was coming from, but I always assumed it was the transmission. It was intermittent, and would do it at different times, with different conditons (Warm ambiant temp., cold ambiant temp. Warm trans. temp., cold trans. temp. Different speeds and gears. Sometimes at startup, sometimes after driving for long periods.) Either way, when I would hear it, it would only last for a few minutes, then disappear. Sometimes, it would go for months without doing it at all!
Well, last night it dd it agian. This time, it was a lot louder! But as always, it went away after a few minutes. There wasn't, or has there ever been, a change in the way it drives. It shifts smoothly into all gears, and even kicks down on passing. Has anyone dealt with this before? Could it be a drive shaft issue? Any thoughts would be great. At this point, I plan to drive it until it dies. Which was my thought the first time I heard it 6 years ago, and it is still going!
