What is the little plate under the master cylinder? 700 1991

Just replaced the brake master cylinder on our 1991 745T, and there is a little metal plate under it. The plate is rather thick, about 1/8" or more, about 3"X4", has a hole in it that orients it to a bump on the bottom of the M/C, and is held on by two bolts and strap that goes over the top of the M/C under the res. The plate attaches to nothing else, touches nothing else. Anybody know what it is for?
