fuel pump circuit 700 1990

1990 volvo 740GLE 16 valve ran fine until one day it coughed like it was not getting fuel and died. It started right up and then I drove it for about 5 minutes cruising a lot looking at tractors. I parked and went into the business and when starting it about 40 minutes later, would just crank and crank. I narrowed it to no fuel and after removing the cannister in the tank, the pump there is not getting current. There are 3 wires in the connection that services the plug on the intank unit. One is faded red or pink, a grey with white stripe and a tan one. There is no power to the red/pink wire which runs the intank fuel pump. There is power to the wire that runs the fuel gage. I also have a pump mounted on the underneath of the drivers side frame between the front and rear seat area. I assume that the rear pump runs first, but am open to any ideas. I have purchased both the intank and underneath pumps and the filters, but have not installed them because the one that was in the tank works fine if given power. I did check the fuses in the center of the dash underneath the ashtray location, and they are fine. This is probably not an isolated problem, and also have searched the topics, but could have missed it. Thanks in advance SD
