P0117 engine coolant temp circuit low input 900 1997

daughter driving car and check engine comes on and arrow indicating in winter mode although didn't change it. was running rough so pulled over, stopped and would not start. now sometimes starts, sometimes not but runs rough when starts. Fan runs sometimes key off and engine cold. Pulled the code in subject line. I assume the engine temp sensor bad but can't find the damn thing even though I have book point somewhere near the front of fuel rail as I would like to confirm the resistance output is bad. Anyone can help with location?
