Brake dust shields 700

Are brake dust shields (called protecting plates in VADIS) important? The fronts are pretty much rusted away on my wagon. I'm replacing pads and rotors soon and that would be a good time to do it. I'd rather not, though if they are not all that important. I can get the extra stuff needed fo about $110 from Tasca for both sides.
