But the hub does need to come off on the fronts, at least for the newer ones with the rotor and hub are separate? (see my reply to BOB above)
I am debating the investment/return of replacing the shields. As others have pointed out, rusted shields can mean rusted rotors/brake parts. This may just be a symptom of the condition the vehicle was exposed to. I do not think the shields are sacrificial in protecting anything.
I had an 89, then bought a 90 with fewer miles and was surprised to see how much more rust was present on the 90 (similiar geographic histories) Maybe the 90 was parked outside and mine garaged which made a big difference.
