What is the best way to check transmission fluid level on 1996 960 sedan? 900 1996

I know the yellow handled tranmission dipstick must be accessed from below to check transmission fluid level, but what is the best practical way to do that at home, without a lift, and get a correct reading? I am sure it should be done after warming the transmission up by driving, but just exactly how do you go about it after that? I am going to have to drive up on ramps to even get under there, but how do I get a correct reading with the nose of the car elevated higher than the rear? I would think the car should be level to read it correctly. Should it be running and in "Park" like other cars, or what? This might sound like a silly question, but I have never seen any explanation anywhere about how to do it correctly. Thanks.
